Why Is My Laptop Running So Slow?

Your laptop doesn't have to feel like it's running through molasses. Here is how to diagnose the slowdown...

Check Background Startup Apps

Too many apps launching at boot will drag down performance instantly. Every time you turn on your laptop, dozens of applications quietly load into your system tray and memory without your explicit permission—from chat apps and cloud updaters to device management utilities.

How to Fix It:

  • On Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager, then click on the Startup apps tab (the speedometer icon). Review the list and look at the "Startup impact." Right-click any non-essential apps (like Spotify, Discord, or Steam helpers) and select Disable.
  • On Mac: Open System Settings, navigate to General > Login Items, and check both "Open at Login" and "Allow in the Background." Remove any apps you do not need running constantly.

Monitor Your RAM and CPU Usage

If your computer freezes up or takes minutes to open a simple browser tab, your hardware might be maxed out. Open your Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and look at your real-time resource consumption.

  • High CPU Usage: If your processor is constantly running at 90% to 100% even when you aren't doing much, a rogue process, background scan, or corrupted driver is usually to blame.
  • High Memory (RAM) Usage: If your RAM is maxed out, your computer is forced to use your storage drive as temporary memory (paging), which causes massive slowdowns—especially if you are using an older mechanical hard drive.

Check for Storage Space and Drive Health

A nearly full hard drive can choke your operating system. Windows and macOS both need a healthy cushion of free space (at least 10% to 15% of your total drive capacity) to manage virtual memory swap files and temporary updates.

Furthermore, if your laptop still utilizes an older mechanical hard drive (HDD) rather than a Solid State Drive (SSD), it will naturally degrade in speed over time as the physical read/write head fragments files. Upgrading an aging HDD to a modern SSD provides an immediate, night-and-day performance boost.

Clear Out Bloatware and Unused Software

Over the years, we all accumulate software utilities, browser extensions, and free trials that we no longer use. Left behind, these programs often leave background services running that quietly consume system resources.

Take 10 minutes to audit your installed programs panel:

  • Uninstall games, utilities, and applications you haven't opened in over six months.
  • Clean up your web browser by removing unused or outdated extensions that hog memory.
